For my masters degree final project in 2019, I created a Virtual Reality (VR) interactive experience focusing on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) specifically the effect of PTSD in war veterans. Researching into the impact of PTSD on an individual’s mental state and resulting effects of the mental trauma. Exploring the resulting use of alcohol as a forum of self-medicating to suppress PTSD symptoms, causing a positive association with alcohol leading to an alcohol use disorder (AUD). The project is aimed to highlight the effects and dangers of PTSD as the risk for suicidal ideation is 5.7 times greater in veterans that suffer from both PTSD and AUD. Using virtual reality to place the users into the literal mind of a veteran suffering from PTSD, to experience its symptoms, triggers and effects of the mental trauma on an individual first hand. Using interaction with modern technology to raise awareness for an age-old condition. I developed this project solo, coding all of the gameplay and mechinces using blueprints in UE4, as well as modelling and texturing the entire environment myself. The project also uses Real Time rendering.
